Connexius Genome Editing Asia 2027

Genome editing is rapidly transforming the possibilities of modern medicine, enabling scientists to precisely modify DNA and RNA and opening new approaches to treating genetic disorders, cancer, infectious diseases and other complex conditions. Across Asia-Pacific, advances in CRISPR-Cas systems, base and prime editing, functional genomics, cell engineering and novel delivery technologies are accelerating the journey from fundamental research towards therapeutic development.

The region is already demonstrating significant momentum. In Singapore, the A*STAR Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) is developing next-generation CRISPR technologies for DNA and RNA engineering, including new editing systems and viral and non-viral delivery approaches for targeted therapeutics. Singapore researchers have also demonstrated an AAV-delivered CRISPR-Cas13 approach targeting the EV-A71 virus, highlighting the potential of genome editing beyond inherited genetic diseases.

Momentum is also growing across the wider Asian therapeutic ecosystem. China introduced new rules in 2026 governing investigator-initiated cell and gene therapy trials, reflecting the increasing movement of advanced genetic technologies towards clinical evaluation. At the same time, Asia's growing genomics capabilities are providing increasingly rich datasets and technologies for understanding disease biology and identifying new therapeutic targets.
